Christmas and the New Year’s celebrations are over. The kids are back to school and we’re all settling in for the rest of winter. Us Wisconsinites know that the winter can get long, and sometimes we just need something new to keep us going until the sun warms our faces again. Have you ever considered starting a new family tradition? We all can admit we’d like to spend more time with our children, and being intentional in our time with them can be challenging! If you haven’t tried already, carve out 30 minutes every day to sit down with your kids and read an exciting book series together out loud! We have a lot of fantastic books here at the library that make for some truly imaginative fun to last you and the kids the rest of the winter! You can make it even more exciting by reading with different voices for each character! 🙂
Need some ideas? We’re happy to help! Here are some of my personal favorites (Rachelle).
The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson–This is a 4 book series full of adventure. You will not be bored as you read aloud about the brave Iggaby children, the terrible Fangs of Dang or the rough and tumble Strander camp full of conniving thieves and hobos.
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis- This is a 7 book series about the fantastical land of Narnia and all the adventures found therein with the Pevensie children among many others!
Red Fairy and Fox by Courtney Dennelsbeck- This is a 3 book series from a Minnesota author that just made her debut in 2024 with these wonderful books! Imagine a young fairy queen and her snarky fox guide as they fight to restore their kingdom from the great destroyer.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott-This classic novel cannot be beat!! It’s full of beauty and drama and so much virtue!! It’s truly a classic for a reason!!
Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander- An old, 5-book, coming of age series that never gets old! I personally sobbed at the end of the final book. It’s just that good!!
Of course, there’s so much more out there, and if we don’t have it, we can order it for you! Let’s keep our imaginations whirring as we settle in for these long winter days!
